Pictures from Nanjing 1

I have a special interest in Nanjing and its recent history. Several times in China's history it was her capital. Few of you might have heard of the Nanjing Massacre committed by the Japanese. Here two links if you are interested:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanjing
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanking_Massacre

The second link is not for the faint-hearted. The real scandal is that still Japanese members of government honor their war criminals once a year.

But first the pictures of some sights of Nanjing, predominantly modern as the Japanese did a thorough job of destruction also after they entered the city...

The city's hero: Dr. Sun Yatsen

The Japanese destruction left little of Nanjing's old architecture

But the new one is quite attractive...

Yes, also here...

... but pollution is a severe problem...

... still some Chinese's favorite pass time...

... that's all that remained from the old imperial palace...

... and tai-chi almost everywhere...

... and they love their parks...

...reconstructed outer gate of the palace...

...one of the old city gates that the Japanese didn't manage to destruct...

... a more idyllic part ...

... Nanjings pride, the double-decker bridg...

... replete with revolutionary architectural details...
